Benefits of Using a Power Washer for Your Deck Refinishing in Chantilly, VA

  • To safely remove any dirt, mold, or mildew.
  • To safely remove old finishes such as stain or peeling paints.
  • To open the pores of the wood to allow deeper penetration of the new deck finish or stain.

Some homeowners who attempt to use a power washer themselves to refinish their deck in Chantilly, VA use too high a jet pressure and place the tip too close to the wood. Set the pressure on the power washer for your deck refinishing as low as possible while still being effective. For soft wood such as cedar or pine, the pressure should be at about 500 psi to 600 psi. For harder wood you can go a little higher but no more than 1200 to 1500 psi. Use a fan tip or a rotating tip. The normal size of a fan tip for deck refinishing is 40 to 60 degrees.

Begin by depressing the trigger to start the water pressure. Keep it away from people and about 24 inches from the wood deck, then slowing move into about 12-18 inches from the deck. Unless you are on low pressure, never get closer than 12 inches. Start off in an inconspicuous area so if you would ruin the board, it can be easily replaced. Set your pressure to about 600 psi to start with and increase if needed but not too much or it may damage the surface of the wood. Use a sweeping motion along the grain spraying two boards at a time, covering the whole length of the deck. Keep the nozzle moving to avoid etching the wood. Your second pass should overlap the first. Try and be consistent so you will not leave any overlap marks on your deck. Allow deck to dry 24 hours before finishing and sealing your deck.
